Ellisland Farm is synonymous with Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, who spent three years (1788-1791) tilling the land and working as an exciseman. It is recorded he rode up to 200 miles per week in addition to his farm work which must have effected his health and contributed to his early death in 1796. Amongst many works he wrote whilst working Ellisland was arguably his most famous, ‘Tam O Shanter’. It is likely he was recalling a wintry River Nith when he wrote –

‘But pleasures are like poppies spread
you seize the flower, its bloom is shed
or like the snow falls on the river
a moment white – then melts forever.’

The farm buildings at Ellisland have been lovingly restored by Burns enthusiasts and are well worth a visit. The original painting (a large A2 gouache) was taken from very recent studies on the river path near Ellisland Farm. The walks at and around Ellisland are highly recommended. The walks North and South of Ellisland are rather beautiful and can be accessed from the farm. A good set of ‘wellies’ are recommended in the winter as it can get a bit muddy underfoot!

The print is now available for purchase. The original work which has been purchased by Dumfries Howff Burns Club will be on display at the prestigious Spring Fling taster Exhibition being held in Gracefield Studious Dumfries in the spring of 2009.
