Ellisland Farm is synonymous with Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, who spent three years (1788-1791) tilling the land and working as an exciseman. It is recorded he rode up to 200 miles per week in addition to his farm work which must have effected his health and contributed to his early death in 1796. Amongst many works he wrote whilst working Ellisland was arguably his most famous, ‘Tam O Shanter’. It is likely he was recalling a wintry River Nith when he wrote –
