Sandyhills is one of the most popular beaches in the South West of Scotland. The winding road on its approach to the shore at Colvend (travelling from Dumfries) is quite dramatic in places with towering cliffs and secluded coves at Port O Warren and Douglas Hall.

In the poem 'Sandyhills' the artist recalls fond memories of bustrips which at that time was the only way for most working class people to visit the beach. His father worked with the Western Bus Company and 'Calais Trips' as they were called then were the highlight of many a young boy's summer.
