Probably the most famous landmark in Dumfries, the bridge is steeped in history and marks the site of a wooden bridge built by Lady Devorgilla, a 13th century noblewoman. The original stone bridge had nine arches but due to flood prevention and development of the Whitesands area only six arches remain. Many famous historical figures would have crossed this bridge including Robert Burns when he worked and lived in the town as an exciseman.
